Cherry Lake Shelter- Morgan Monroe State Forest

The next Hoosier Mushroom Society Foray is set for Saturday, September 11th at 3pm at Morgan-Monroe State Forest.  Directions to the Forest can be found  here.   Morgan-Monroe offers free admission, free shelter usage and cheaper camping (primitive only). We will be meeting at the Cherry Lake  Shelter located at the junction of Forest Road and Service Road.  There is a large picnic area and is close to the Forest office.  All shelters are on a first come first serve basis, but were told that there shouldn’t be a problem with finding a site.

Camping is also available and the Mason Ridge Campground, located behind the fire tower north of the forest office, has vault toilets and drinking water.  There are picnic tables and grills at each of these primitive sites.  Overflow camping is available at Oak Ridge Campground.

Morgan-Monroe State Forest encompasses more than 24,000 acres in both Morgan and Monroe counties in south central Indiana.  The land is comprised of steep ridges, valleys, and is forested with some of the state’s finest and oldest hardwoods.  This habitat combined with the fall climate should produce some great fungi finds.

This is a chance for people to learn about mushrooms in their natural environments and meet others with wide interests in fungi from hunting, to identification, to cooking and more!  Attendees walk through the woods, identifying and collecting mushrooms as they go.  At the end, we will meet as a group and go over what was found and cook up some of the finds! We will hung from 3pm- 5ish and have a pitch in dinner after. The meeting will last till around 7pm that evening.

In order to collect mushrooms, all that you need to bring a mesh bag or a basket to collect the mushrooms that you find. A small knife and pen/paper can also be helpful.  Please keep in mind we will be in a forest, so dress appropriately and bring proper supplies (water, bug spray etc).

There are no dues or fees for this event however we ask that you bring some kind of food item with you to this event and we will be taking donations to off set the cost of this and future meetings. Grills will be available at the shelter so if you would like to cook up anything you find please bring necessary supplies.

Primitive camping is available at Morgan Monroe State Forest. Cost of camping is $8.00 per night. You are permitted to have 2 vehicles, 2 tents, and 6  people per site, any extra vehicles can be parked at the Forestry Office.  Camping is on a first come, first serve basis, but again we were told this shouldn’t be a problem.
